Bias for execution and action works when you have clarity. And how do you have clarity? By writing the script.
When I talk to Founders who are just about to start their company or launch their product I advice them to do an exercise. It’s a simple exercise in theory but much difficult when you actually end up doing it but definitely and totally worth it.
The advice is simple:
“Write the script before you start filming.”
“Write down everything that is going to happen with your product, team, capital, execution etc in the next twelve months.”
This basically means that you literally spend days just writing everything that you can think of that you’re going to do and what will happen as a result of it and what will you do then.
Define everything, every single thing. Write the script.
Every time we watch a Christopher Nolan movie, we go crazy. Did he start filming it directly? Or was every single careful detail taken care of in the script?
No, nobody is asking you to create a formal business plan.
I am talking about writing the script of the movie of your company. How will it play out in the next twelve months? Just take your Notes App and start writing it.
Most rewarding experience.
And once the script is ready, go out and get the best team to make a film out of it.
Thanks for putting this out. I am personally guilty of making the mistake of not doing any research or pre-production before getting in to execution mode many a time. Have always thought it was about execution. But Belief -> Clarity -> Execution is really the order.
Doing the research and nailing it down with proper understanding can be the unfair advantage.
This is really insightful. Never thought about approaching it this way. Thanks Gaurav.
