It’s never just the Product. It’s Iconic Product thinking applied to many more areas of the company.
Traction Channels
Brand
Social Media
Talent
And more…
We all talk about the products that Apple builds. Yes, they are a class apart. But do you know what else is class apart about them? Their traction channels. They have applied Product thinking in their Traction Channels and made them as Iconic as their Products. How?
Apple Stores
Apple Events
It’s not just about the products. When you see an Apple Store, that’s a Product of its own. When you see an Apple Event, that’s a Product of its own. So much time goes in innovation and planning towards a Store. Location, Design, Layout etc. Similarly for an Event. We have seen in the movies how much preparation Steve Jobs used to do for the Events.
Stop thinking of just the Product and start applying Product thinking into everything. That’s how you build Iconic Systems.
The way Netflix, Tinder and Zomato handle their Social Media is Product thinking applied to a Twitter account. A/B Tests are being done, experiments are being conducted, innovation in content.
Few months back we hired a Sales Head at Unacademy. First day he comes and asks me that how many people should he hire, I said first I will review his pitch deck to the student and then I will approve a hiring plan. For the next forty days (39 more days than he thought it would take) we worked on the pitch and how will the whole Sales process look like. We were not building a Sales Team. We were building a Product which is a process through which Learners will get to know what we are building.
Nike treats every ad that it creates as a Product. That’s why the ads are so brilliant…
Here’s one of my favourite ones:
Don’t just build great Products. Build everything through the lens of a Product. Treat everything as a Product and build it in an Iconic manner.
As Steve Jobs mentioned ,he learned from Nike marketing rituals and successfully applied to Apple products.
I actually planned to write on this topic once, it's still there in my idea list. Definitely applying product thinking to everything works. I apply this to stock markets and even gardening. "Build-measure-learn-build" loop, "Everything in life is a funnel" and "80-20 rule" should be taught like Newton's laws in schools.
